Initially, I had reservations about EFHW antennas and their multiband capabilities, suspecting they might be another compromise solution. However, after reading several positive reviews of Chris Hofstetter’s (KO4FSZ) antennas, I decided to try them.
When I purchased the 10-40 meter version of his antenna, I was pleasantly surprised by the prompt delivery and the ease of installation. Within 15 minutes, I had the antenna installed, extending to a neighbor’s tree. The transformer was mounted at my roof peak, approximately 18 feet high, with the antenna configured as a sloper to a tree about 30 feet away.
And the performance? It was impressive. I was able to operate on 40, 20, 15, and 10 meters without any need for tuning, achieving a VSWR of 2:1 or less on each band. With a simple tune on my FT-710, I also operated 12 and 17 meters.
Within thirty minutes, I made approximately a dozen contacts and received excellent signal reports. Although there was a slight increase in noise on 20 meters compared to my dipole, both reception and transmission were comparable. I was so impressed that I purchased a second to use for POTA.
For those skeptical about EFHW antennas, I highly recommend considering KO4FSZ’s offerings. You will be satisfied.
